Be Still

Updated: Dec 14, 2022

They marched out boldly, knowing that they were finally free. A promise had been made and kept. The assurance of safety would soon end as chariots and a vast army approached. What tasted like freedom now felt like certain death.

Take Stock

The year is coming to an end. There have been days we wake up with the assurance of safety. That we are financially secure, our relationships are stable, and our goals are on track. Some seasons however have a cloud of doom, that feels so painful and hopeless.

As the days of the year perish you might feel like the chariots and horsemen are getting closer and closer and you have no escape. Tears feel useless. Those around you are as helpless are you are. Who will rescue the situation?

What about you who has seen victory and the armies being swallowed by the sea? Who brought down those barriers and can anyone dare rebuild them? Now that you have tasted success, do you still fear the chariots or do you trust God who made you walk on dry land this year?

The Battle

After we take stock we realise that we are either done with a battle or still in one. What is most important to understand is who is fighting the battle. We then understand who to trust, seek and fear.

Exodus 14:14
14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Be Still

Being still requires us to be fully submitted to God. It is so radical sometimes that we might sound crazy or foolish but we are not. It's allowing God to go ahead of you so that you may not stumble in pride and pleasures once you succeed and the thorn of worries will not choke you out as Pharoah approaches.

Stillness brings attention to what God is saying and the response should be obedience. Is it going around the Jericho walls or is digging trenches for God's water to flow? You will never know if you don't listen.

Devote the City to God

It felt like death was certain, but now we walk on dry ground with a wall of water on the right and on the left. It felt like the fortified walls would never fall but now they have collapsed.

Who should receive the glory? Of course, the Warrior who went before us. He fights for us. As we take into account the events of the year. The default mode would be glorifying God for the victories and future victories that we hope for but have not yet seen.

Psalm 46:10
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
